Where Fairshare producers are located
Rukwa Region, situated on the shores of Lake Tanganyika is one of the most isolated and least populated regions in Tanzania, although it has the potential to be one of the biggest food producing regions in the country. It has a rainy season of 5-6 months. The people are mainly subsistence cultivators using the hoe to work their land and in better off households using oxen and plough. Main crops in Sumbawanga District are maize, beans, cassava, sunflower and groundnuts (peanuts). Development has been slow to come to Rukwa due to its remoteness and poor transport links.
